LGBTQ Youth at Greater Risk During COVID-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 Pandemic continues to have an unprecedented impact on us all, across all sectors of society.
A recent national survey by Egale Canada* found that LGBTQ Canadians are more impacted by the novel coronavirus pandemic than other Canadians.
The Egale Canada survey found “that LGBTQ Canadians are more likely to be living with a chronic health condition (29 percent for LGBTQ and 15 percent for all Canadians) or a physical disability (12 percent for LGBTQ and seven percent for other Canadians)… Over half of LGBTQ Canadians have been affected (53 %) by layoffs or reduced hours themselves or by someone in their household, compared to 39 percent of other Canadians.”
While we all are vulnerable in some way by the COVID-19 Pandemic, LGBTQ youth in particular are adversely effected. It is well evidenced that LGBTQ individuals face higher risks of mental health issues due to the effects of discrimination and social determinants of health, these issues are compounded with the social isolation, unemployment, household stress, and economic uncertainties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

LGBTQ individuals also perceive a significantly greater impact of the COVID-19 pandemic upon their current physical and mental health, household finances, and quality of life, as well as their outlook in these areas in the near future.
We are in this COVID-19 fight together, and we all have a greater responsibility to care for those most vulnerable in our community. LGBTQ youth, being at greater risk, need us all to speak out and act on their behalf.
At Resolute Clothing Co, with the sale of our LGBTQ t-shirt collection, we continue our deep commit to support LGBTQ youth with access to health and education opportunities, in particular helping to fund youth services at The 519 Community Center and the LGBTQ Youth Line during these uncertain times.
